AP: Gardasil Most Painful Childhood Vaccination
Physician's First Watch for January 7, 2008 Gardasil, the HPV vaccine, is becoming known as the most painful childhood vaccination, according to the Associated Press. The AP reports that patients complain of a burning sensation and an inability to drive with or sleep on the affected arm for up to a day. Merck's premarketing studies also showed more reports of pain than with placebo shots. The AP cited CDC data showing there were 50 reports of vaccine-associated fainting in girls from 2002–2004 and 230 from 2005 until last July; however, it is unclear how many of these incidents were pain-related.
